The Seymour Eagles wrestling team recently competed in the Smoky Mountain Duals at Pigeon Forge High School.
Over the two day period, the Eagles won four matches and lost four matches with Junior Luke Hall (119 lbs) and Senior Michael Raimondi (135 lbs) winning 8 out of 8 matches.
The first day’s competition was the toughest.   Top schools included Jefferson from Georgia, Whitley County from Kentucky, Ravenwood, Hughes from Ohio and Pigeon Forge.  Seymour managed only one win and four losses.
On the second day the Eagles won all three matches against Brentwood, Beech and Gibbs High Schools.
Jefferson High was the overall tournament winner.
Seymour Coach Alex Cate had this to say, “It was a tough tournament with tough competition.  Our overall record so far this season is 9 and 5 against very good programs.  Two losses were to outstanding teams from out of state, and the other loss was to Bradley High School who is number one in the state.  Pigeon Forge is also very strong along with Ravenwood who is 8th in the state.”
Coach Cate went on to say, “We haven’t lost to a team this season we were suppose to beat.  Our guys have been a strong tournament team.”
Next for the Eagles is a match at home against Gibbs, Karns and Morristown West on Thursday, January 7th.
On Saturday Seymour travels to Greeneville, TN to wrestle in the GIT (Greeneville Invitational Tournament).  Coach Cate said, “I’m really looking forward to the Greeneville Tournament since we usually do well in those.”
Seymour Youth Wrestling will meet January 11th at 5:45 p.m. in the wrestling room (N.
