Bowling is one of the few sports that perfection can be obtained. On Tuesday, December 1st, Corey Cox was perfect with a score of 300. He made 12 strikes and that’s all; nothing but strikes every time he rolled the ball down the lane.
The senior on the Seymour High School Bowling team will never forget that day. He was asked what it felt like to be perfect in the sport he loved, “Besides an 800 series, it’s the best you can do in bowling. It felt great. I got really nervous toward the end. My knees actually started buckling.”
Cox has been bowling 11 years since he was 6 years old. Last Tuesday at ‘Strike and Spare Western Avenue Bowling Lane’ he achieved one of his goals in bowling, a perfect score of 300. His main goal is to be on the Professional Bowling Tour. Cox bowled in a youth league growing up and now he is the marquee player on the Seymour High School bowling team. The bowling Coach of the Eagles, Charles Ogle said, “ Corey Cox is the best player in our region. He averages 222 per match. Last year at the state, he averaged 260 with a 780 total. Corey has been to the state all three years and I expect him to go this year.” Seymour’s region includes Sevier County, Pigeon Forge, G-P, Heritage, William Blount, West and Catholic.
Last year the Eagles won the region and went to the state. They lost two outstanding seniors but this year the team still has the leadership of three seniors; Corey Cox, Zack Cook and Joey Snider with two very promising freshmen, Dylan McClure and Quinton Aubuchon.
Seymour’s current record is 7-3 with three matches remaining.
Coach Ogle had this to say about the season so far, “We are in a slump right now, but we were last season also about this time but we came out of it before Region. We’ve got a really good group of kids both boys and girls.”
The girls team is currently 2-6 but “getting better” according to Ogle. They are loaded with seniors, Cayla Clabo, Holly Romines, Amands DeBlors, Maria DeLucia, Brittany Blanchard and Cara Monghi.
The most important part of the season is the Regional Tournament at the end of the season in January. If the Eagles make it out of the region they will go the state in Smyrna, Tennessee.
Bowling is an official TSSAA high school sport which was started 10 years ago. It is overlooked sometimes along with other minor sports when compared to other major sports such as football, basketball or baseball. As with any sport, however, you have to be good to play it competitively at the high school level.
Coach Willis started the first bowling team at that time. Charles Ogle became the coach 5 years ago. His assistant is Greg Haggard.
Most of the bowling matches are held at the Pigeon Forge Community Center. The Seymour Herald would like to wish the Eagles good luck the rest of the season and into the regional tournament.
