A 2-0 win over Jefferson County secured a spot in the 2-AAA Regional Championship. The Seymour Lady Eagles Soccer team is moving on to the Regional.
After an emotional season ending win over Sevier County 4-2 on their home field coached by former Seymour Coach Bobby Norwood, the Lady Eagles displayed no mental letdown.  The win gave Seymour a three seed in the District.   “I’ll remember that one for a while. We played by far our best game of the season.  I guess the girls were highly motivated and we just came out on all cylinders” said Coach Drew Payne.  It was the Lady Eagles seniors’ first win over the Barrettes.
Their first District win was over Cocke County by a score of 9-0.  The Lady Eagles cruised to an easy victory with great offense and perfect defense over the Lady Red in the opener at Sevierville.
The Lady Eagles scored seven unanswered goals in the first half and added some insurance to second half with 2.  Senior Courtney Suttles led the team with four goals.  Junior Jodie Wood and Lauren Johnson finished out the scoring.
Seymour has won six out of their last seven games prompting this comment from Coach Payne, “We are playing really well lately.  We’re on a roll.  The win over Jefferson County is just another example.  We tend to start games a little slow then have a good second half.”
The Lady Eagles have been very strong defensively in the past few games.  “Jeff County only got off five shots the entire game.  We’re playing good defense before the ball gets close to our goal” said Payne.
The Seymour team has four seniors, two juniors and the rest sophomores and freshmen.
It is a tribute to Coach Payne that the Lady Eagles have improved as the season has progressed.  The new system is a change from last year.  “The change has taken time” said Payne.  The players have done a good job at buying into the new system Coach Payne has installed which is a more ball control offense with more passing.  Defense is a top priority.  As the saying goes, offense sell tickets, defense wins championships.
The Lady Eagles soccer team will be moving on the next level – the Regional.  No matter what happens there, they have already represented Seymour High School in an outstanding manner.
