Bailey Webb and Megan Gamble qualified for the TSSAA high school Region 1-AAA golf tournament on Monday in the District tournament held at Clinchview Golf Course in Morristown, Tennessee. Webb (senior) finished fourth with a 101 while Gamble (junior) finished fifth with a 103.
The Lady Eagles shot 204 (two count) as a team and finished sixth overall. Jefferson County won the District Championship with a 145 combined team score. Also moving on to the Region was Cocke County and Morristown East. Seymour finished ahead of Morristown West (204) and Cherokee (incomplete).
In a high school district tournament, the top three teams move on, along with the top five individual players not on any one of those three teams.
Before the day started, Webb and Gamble knew they had a very slim chance of finishing among the top three teams which contain some of the premier players in the state. They did however believe that they could go as individuals. That faith and confidence paid off. The girls have been working very hard on their games at the local driving ranges as well as playing practice rounds. Webb commented, “I told some people before the round that Megan and I could make it as individuals if we didn’t as a team. The hard work paid off.”
Despite a losing season record, to make the region as individuals is quite an accomplishment. Both girls have come a long way since they started high school golf.
The girl’s medalist was All-State sensation Kendall Martindale from Jefferson County High School with a sizzling 66 on the par 72 course.
On the boys side, the Eagles also finished sixth with a 360 (four count). The young team is made up of mostly freshmen and sophomores. Seymour was led by Parker Rudder with an 86, Justice Murphy 87, Michael Bennett 90 and Andrew Boling 97.
Parker Rudder missed qualifying for the Region as an individual by only one place. He finished sixth.
The Boy’s medalist was Logan Hance from Jefferson County with a 73. The Patriots also won the team championship with a 298 total. They move on to the Region along with Cocke County (305) and Morristown West (315).
Coach Gary Householder commented on the day’s results, “I’m very proud of Bailey and Megan moving on to the Region. That is quite an honor. The boys are young. They actually performed better than I expected this season considering that fact.”
