A local entrepreneurial spirit known far and wide has passed away. The man whose name is bestowed upon numerous construction sites across East Tennessee and Western North Carolina as well as in the hearts and minds of a large family, friends and employees will be missed.
Charles “Charlie” Levador Blalock’s career as a businessman can be attributed to when he opened the Blalock Lumber Company in 1935.
He survived The Great Depression and then branched out by opening a hardware store, grocery store and cement plant. Each of his new businesses were based in Sevier County and passed the test of time.
It wasn’t until 1963 that he along with his sons formed Charles Blalock & Sons, Inc., to serve the road construction needs of then and today.
No question, Blalock knew what he and his sons were doing as evidenced by the boom the company experienced over the next few decades. The group didn’t stop there. They added an asphalt division, concrete structures division, and a utilities division.
In 2001 Blalock was inducted into the East Tennessee Business Hall of Fame for all of his endeavors.
Charlie Blalock died Monday at the age of 98.
