The first Smoky Mountain Kick-Off Jamboree for Sevier County high school football programs was a huge success. It was held at Sevier County High School.  The teams included Seymour, Sevier County, Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg-Pittman.
All proceeds went towards helping offset the cost of insurance coverage for the athletic programs at each school.
Although each team wanted to win, the main objective was to raise money.  Another objective was to give each coach a chance to see how their players would perform in a game situation before their first real game coming up this week.  The final objective was to give the people of Sevier County a chance to have some fun.
Each school had a cheerleading team present as well as a band.  There was a game-like atmosphere.  The stands were full, the concession lines were long, the weather was great and everyone was just having a really good time.  The bottom line – mission accomplished.
In the first game (one quarter in length), the Seymour freshmen tied with Sevier County 0-0.   Defense ruled as both offenses struggled.  Both teams passing games were weak.  The running game of both teams wasn’t good enough to make up for the lack of a passing game.
In the second game, the Seymour Eagles JV team dominated 14-7 over Gatlinburg-Pittman.  Except for one long pass from Myers to Green, G-P was controlled by the Seymour defense.
The Eagles offense was led by running backs Corey Todd and Taylor Overton who ran 17 yards for a Seymour touchdown.  The game ended with an interception by Eagles defensive back Billy Taylor.
In the third game, Sevier County JV defeated Pigeon Forge 10-0.  Sevier County opened with a strong drive led by the running of Matt Horne, a junior.
Defensively, the Smoky Bears dominated Pigeon Forge holding them scoreless.  Sevier County closed the game with a field goal.
The varsity game between Seymour and Gatlinburg-Pittman ended in a 0-0 tie. The score however, was not indicative of the game.  The Eagles basically controlled the game offensively.  It they had eliminated penalties, they probably would have won.
A key drive toward the end of the game with Blake Overton churning out big chunks of yardage by running the football ended on the G-P 17 yard line with a fumble.  The game was over after Seymour’s defense held G-P.
The organizers of the event are to be commended for putting on such a good show.
