Knoxville, Tenn. (August 13, 2009) – Summer may be over, but the fun is just beginning for girls ages 5-17. The start of the new school year marks a new year in Girl Scouting as new troops are forming across the region.
Girl Scouting is open to all girls ages 5-17. Through Girl Scouts, girls discover the fun, friendship and power of girls together.
Ten-year-old Girl Scout Melia Killion says, “My favorite thing about Girl Scouts is going on trips and getting to spend time with the rest of my troop. You also get to do stuff that you’d never get to do if you weren’t in Girl Scouts,” she says. “We spent the night at the Knoxville Zoo, took a flashlight tour at the Lost Sea and went camping with huge groups.”
“Girl Scouting is the best place for girls to explore the world in an accepting and nurturing all-girl environment,” says Girl Scouts of Tanasi Council CEO Lucille Griffo. “This is key in helping young women develop leadership skills and conviction about their own potential and self-worth.”
For $12 – less than the price of a movie ticket and popcorn – girls can experience the fun and adventure of Girl Scouting for an entire year. Financial assistance is available to ensure every girl can join the fun.
“Girl Scouts gives these girls confidence about themselves, and that is wonderful.” says troop leader Laura Killion. “It’s also a bonding experience for families, opening up new experiences.”
The Girl Scout mission is to build girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.
Tanasi Council staff members match girls with troops that meet in times and locations convenient for the girl’s family. Girls may even participate in the program individually, under the mentorship of a parent or another adult.
