On Friday night, August 21st, a new page in Seymour football will begin.
New head coach Jim Moores Eagles had a very successful scrimmage on Friday against Hardin Valley High School to prepare for that date.  It was a controlled two hour scrimmage with first offense against first defense and second offense against second defense running a pre set number of plays with each.
“We had a good work day,” said Coach Moore. He continued, Our coaches found out what kids can play.  There was some good hitting and also good mental work.  The weather was hot which was good.  We needed some work in the heat to help prepare us for future games.”
The Eagles running game and defense stood out; the two cornerstones of a good, solid football team.  Running backs were seniors Blake Overton, Kegan Newport and Chase Ketron, junior Jamie Cota and sophomore Corey Todd.
Moore said, “We’ve made a lot of progress since two-a-days began and even more improvement since our last scrimmage (Fulton and Anderson Co.).  We need to improve our passing game.”
The Coach seems pleased overall with quarterbacks Ryan Chadwick (Sr.) and Dustin Fain (Jr.).  The passing game is usually behind the running game early in the season due to timing routes and blocking schemes.
“Our lack of depth is probably the biggest concern I have about this football team.  We have very young kids” said Moore.  Seymour lost 30 seniors from last year’s team.  Losing that many seniors is a big loss but the Coach seems confident they will eventually adjust. With youth comes inconsistency therefore patience is a must.
One notable difference in practices this year is their increase in hitting drills compared to the previous program.  The philosophy differs with coaching staffs and the times.  More hitting makes a team more physical but the risk of injury increases.  Its a trade off a coach has to decide on.  So far it’s working.  The Eagles are basically injury free this year.
Seymour will participate in a jamboree for all five Sevier County football teams, Friday night, August 14th at Sevier County High School in Sevierville.
