The SHS boys and girls golf team is currently holding tryouts throughout this week (July 27 through July 31) each morning at 9 am at local Golf Course.  If the teams are not finalized by the end of the week, more selections will be made next week (August 3 through August 6) at practice.
The boy’s team is wide open after the loss of four seniors – Taylor Lindsey, Andrew Ramsey, Derrick Rickels and Spencer Rudder.  They compiled the greatest four year record in the history of Seymour High School Golf; 4 County Championships, 3 District Championships, 1 Region Championship and 1 State Runner-up in 2005, second only to Nashville Goodpasture (a private school).  The seniors combined record for their four years was 102 wins and 9 losses.
The new players will have some big shoes to fill.  They will be a very young team with only two returning players from last year; rising sophomores, Connor Simmons and Michael Bennett.  The rest of the boys trying out will be made up of some promising middle school players as well as a few upper classmen.  The team will be young but has the potential to be a solid team in the future. For coverage of sports other than golf, see the Mountain Press.
Although they lost outstanding senior Maggie Dew to graduation, the Eagles should have the best girl’s golf team they have had in several years with rising seniors Bailey Webb and Megan Gamble who carried much of the load last year as county runner-ups and 3rd in the District Championship.
The Eagles open their season (boys and girls) with a home match at 3 pm on August 3rd at Creekside in Seymour against Cocke County and South Doyle.  The Sevier County Championship is September 1st – 3rd and the District Tournament is on September 15 at Patriot Hills.
