With blue skies and warmer temperatures, summer time in Tennessee invites everyone to get out of the house and enjoy nature at its best. There is no better way to celebrate the seasons than with Tennessee farm products and experiences.
"While most people may think of visiting a farm in the fall to pick a pumpkin or take a hayride, there are many opportunities for the public to visit and experience Tennessee farms in the spring and summer," said Megan Bruch, University of Tennessee Extension marketing specialist with the UT Center for Profitable Agriculture.
Opportunities abound for farm adventures for people of all ages including picking your own strawberries or blueberries, visiting farm animals, learning how farm products are produced, participating in Easter egg hunts or sampling the newest wines at any of several Tennessee wineries. Consumers planning to improve their landscapes or preparing to plant a vegetable garden can stop by an on-farm greenhouse or nursery to pick up spring plants.
Farm fresh food products are another way to experience Tennessee farms. More than 3,500 farmers direct market products to consumers through farmers markets, on-farm retail markets, roadside stands or subscription programs, called CSA’s, in Tennessee.
“Farmers offer a variety of farm fresh meats, eggs, milk, cheese, fruits, vegetables, jams, jellies, baked goods and more,” says Bruch. “Buying products directly from the farmer allows people to learn the story behind the food, provide their families the freshest products available and support the local economy.”
