The pause was so abrupt and the silence so obvious that crickets chirping would have been a welcome relief. What's worse is that I had set myself up for the fall. "So what are your hobbies outside of sports?" I foolishly asked Morgan Peterson and Monica Rogers. You would've thought I'd asked two fish what they liked to do outside of water.
Peterson finally bailed me out by throwing in, "Well, I like to go to the beach in the summer," but not before it had become apparent that Morgan and Monica – M & M of the SHS track team – live to compete.
However, it's not just that they live to compete; it's that they're good at it. Very good. The M & M duo rewrote the SHS track and field record book, combining for five school records, some of which they broke multiple times.
Peterson holds records in the discus, the triple jump and the 100 meter hurdles. She started breaking records her sophomore year, setting the triple jump record at 33'2" and advancing to the state meet shortly after she began competing in the event.
