Sevier County Tax Referendum unofficial results: For – 4,778 Against – 2,342
Sevier County voters went to the polls April 30 to decide whether to authorize the county to levy a local option sale and use tax and voters said YES.
The new tax reportedly was needed for school construction and maintenance, and for buying down the bond debt. A referendum was held last year in which the measure was defeated by 76 votes. This new vote won by a large percent over the last vote. Less than 10 percent of Sevier County voters took to the polls. The official results may change slightly but not enough to make much of a difference to those voting against the referendum.
Superintendent of Sevier County Schools Jack Parton stated after the vote, "This shows that the people of Sevier County agree that education is important and they understand and agree with the blueprint and timetable that the board has presented."
