The Seymour High School debate team took to the road to Nashville Friday April 24th, and Saturday, April 25th for the state held debate. Drama and debate teams from across Tennessee competed at the state level. Those who qualified at the district tournaments were invited to attend.
In the Lincoln Douglas Debate, Nathan Johnston won 2nd place and Andrew Turner was a semi-finalist. Turner also took the title of Best Overall Speaker in Congress. First time state debater, McKenzie Burnett had a three-two record at the event, a great accomplishment for a first time debater. Erica Ivey along with team mate Angela Karl won 3 out of 5 debates. This was also Ivey's first state debate. Fourteen students qualified to compete at this level from Seymour High School.
"I am so proud of the students. They have worked so hard all year and really deserve the recognition that they are receiving. They have represented Seymour with pride. When people ask what school we are from and we say Seymour, they really take notice. We are getting a reputation as a prestigious debate team. The team is now done for the year accept for Johnston who will compete at the national level in June in Birmingham Alabama.
