The crash happened on Newport Highway at the intersection with Blowing Cave Road, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
Emily V. Gray, 21, of Newport attempted to pass another vehicle and lost control of her Grand Marquis. She drove off the side of the road and hit a large tree stump.
Passenger Eric N. Smith, 25, of Newport died. Gray and two other passengers, Joseph C. Kelley, 18, and Robbie J. Farley, 44, were injured.
No one in the vehicle was wearing a seat belt. It is not known if drugs or alcohol were involved.
THP issued a citation. The crash is still under investigation.
