SEVIERVILLE – A couple of local runners are getting Smoky Mountain Area Rescue Ministries’ first-ever 5K in May Rescue Run up and running as co-chairmen of the event.

Dr. John Hood, of Chiropractic Care Center, and Adam Atchley, of Atchley Funeral Home, first got to know each other when Atchley came to Hood to talk about running the Boston Marathon where Hood is a seven-time veteran. Since then, the pair had spoken in passing about organizing something closer to home to give local runners a goal to train for.

“Adam and I have talked about having more events like this to get ready for,” Hood said.

SMARM board member Danny King recently approached Hood about chairing a benefit run for the ministry and Hood pulled Atchley in to help.

Hood said the 5K run and 5K walk is on a nice challenging course on Veterans Boulevard starting and finishing near Dollywood Splash Country’s parking lot entrance. The course starts and ends flat with a challenging hill in between.
