Sevier County participants of the 2009 Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon will have easier access to free post-race injury clinics. The Fort Sanders Sevier Sports Medicine program will provide one of five sites offering free medical service. The clinic will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday, March 30, at the Fort Sanders Sevier Therapy Center adjacent to the medical center at 709 Middle Creek Road, Sevierville.
A safe run or walk without injury is preferred for all who participate in the March 29 Covenant Health Knoxville Marathon, half marathon, 5K, and relay events. But for those who discover bothersome aches, pains, blisters, or other medical concerns after the race, free expert treatment will be available.
Scott Byrd, ATC/L, supervisor of the sports medicine program said, “Often runners don’t feel the results of an injury until the day after it occurs. That’s why we schedule the clinic on Monday after the race. Most of the time we see very minor complaints. Still, it is important to have an ache or pain evaluated. That just saves time and concern in the long run.”
Appointments are not required to see the orthopedic or wound care specialist during the free clinic. Event participants need only bring a photo ID and bib number to verify their participation in the marathon events.
