KNOXVILLE – After falling to Greenback in a match for the Region 2 title, the Seymour Eagles beat Gibbs 46-33 in a divisional elimination match up.
The first four matches of the night were split with pins by Gibbs’ Logan Young and Matt Beeler and Seymour’s Luke Hall and a 19-8 win by Seymour’s Trent Smith.
In what Coach Aaron Maple called a very important match, Seymour’s T.J. Smith pinned Gibbs’ Matt Baker.
In a match earlier this season, Baker had pinned Smith, making the match that night critical to the success of the Seymour Eagles.
Michael Ramondi and Ryan King widened the lead for Seymour with pin wins. Next, Gibbs’ Lucas Farmer won by pin and Kristopher Cope won 10-5.
Before forfeiting the last two matches, Seymour received 12 points with pins by Joe Wisell and John Davis.
Coach Maples said, “This makes us one of the top eight teams in our division in the state and that’s something to be proud of.”
In the previous match against Greenback, the Cherokees started the night with a pin by Tanner Vetilo, only to lose the next match in a 23-9 win by Trent Williams.
The next two matches also were split on pins by Seymour’s Michael Raimondi and Greenback’s Michael Hoper, making the score Cherokees12 – Eagles 11.
Greenback then took a 24-11 lead, winning the next two matches with pins by Jeremy Miller and Trey Clark.
The last eight matches were an even split – 4 pins by Seymour’s Isaac Legg, Joe Wissell, John Davis and Luke Hall. Greenback received a forfeit at heavy weight and 3 pins by Josh Ford, Jackie Millen and Dalton Gentry.
The final score was Greenback 48, Seymour 34.
Seymour will face East Literature in Clarkesville in the first round of the Division 1 Class A-AA Tournament.
