Education is vital to a progressive society.
Dr. Jack Parton wants to make certain that the Sevier County School System continues to progress. One way he is doing it is through a recent education summit.
It’s a bold move these days to get people to give up more of their ever-disappearing time and money, but that’s what he’s asking.
Several discussions at the tables revolved around the fact that the referendum for a tax sales increase failed last August because people didn’t realize the tax would entail such a miniscule amount of money that they would never notice it.
Maybe so, but out in the public, the concern was more along the lines of where the money – about an $111 million annual budget – now going?
They ask, why do they need more? Money has already been allocated for growth projects in previous budgets.
I can’t answer for Dr. Parton, but in our own lives, it seems every month the cost of doing business continues to increase.
I’m certain it’s the same for every other business, including the business of education.
Yes, there have been some questionable activities in the school system, but then again, when you have the largest exposure to the community, it’s inevitable that someone is going to complain about something, whether it’s legitimate or not.
I believe there should a full disclosure on the part of the school system.
Let the people see and understand the mechanics of running the organization with the greatest amount of employees in the county.
I commend Dr. Parton for taking action, for the alternative is certain failure.
There is no question education is considered the cornerstone of society and as such, we must be vigilant that education remains one of our major concerns.
William Allin said it best, “Education is not the answer to the question. Education is the means to the answer to all questions.”
