Former Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer, amidst a round of public confusion and controversy, decided to decline university president John Petersen’s offer to serve as a special assistant to the president for the next three months.

Instead, Fulmer said he intends to serve the university strictly on a volunteer basis for the time being.

“Today I informed President Petersen that I will not be transitioning to a position in the President’s office at this time,” Fulmer stated in a university press release. “Instead, I have offered my services to (Petersen) as an alumni volunteer, helping develop the university’s relationships with its supporters.

“It has always been my goal to do what’s right for this great University and bring Tennessee people together, and that’s what I will continue to do,” Fulmer said.
