The annual induction of the Seymour High School Karen Housewright Tipton Chapter of the National Honor Society was met with exited students, parents and supporters Tuesday evening in the Seymour High School Auditorium.
Membership in the prestigious organization is an honor earned by eac student. Selection for membership is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, and service.
SHS Vice Principle Mr. Haggard told the audience that in 1921 the National Association of Secondary School Principals passed the resolution to form a National Honor Society. Today over 15,000 chapters exist across the United States. This organization is recognized nationwide and all acknowledge its integrity, value, and importance. Membership in this society is a worthy goal for all students.
The Seymour High School National Honor Society faculty council members are ¬Christi Carpenter, Tami McCroskey, Joyce McFall, Mary Tankersley, and Sherri Whaley. Haggard is the advisor to the council. He told the audience, “Which means that I do the errands, meet with the students, and any other bookkeeping type of thing.”
Once a student is inducted into the National Honor Society, he or she becomes a member for life unless his or her grades fall below academic requirements. At that time the student is placed on probation and is given a semester the bring his/her grades back to the required 3.5. Once the student graduates, he or she becomes a graduate member.
Haggard stated he knows that the University of Tennessee has the collegiate level of the National Honor Society because a number of Seymour NHS members have been inducted into that group, continuing to illustrate the superior traits academically, through leadership, character, and community service.
The students one at a time were called to the stage, awarded a scroll and handed a candle. Following the reciting of the pledge by the honored group, Haggard congratulated the new members of the National Honor Society. Pictures and a reception followed in the library. You are all invited to attend.
