Good food and fun are in store next weekend as St. Joseph the Carpenter Episcopal Church on Hardin Lane in Sevierville presents its annual Pig Roast and Fabulous Friday Lunch.
Church members will conduct their annual vigil around smokers in the parking lot to cook the pork to perfection for both days. Last year, they smoked around 700 pounds of pork; this year, the goal is 1,000 pounds, said Coby Harper, event co-chair.
The Fabulous Friday lunch is Oct. 17, and supplies to-go orders to many local businesses. A second opportunity to sample the lunches will be at the Pig Roast and Mountain Festival on Saturday, Oct. 18 at the church.
“All those pork sales go to support a number of good local causes,” Harper said. The church donates a portion of the proceeds to five local charities.
Orders are now being taken for the Fabulous Friday Lunch. On the menu is a ¼ -pound pork sandwich, coleslaw, chips and a cookie for $7. Orders may be picked up from Mountain Hope Good Shepherd Clinic at 312 Prince Street between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. that day. To avoid disappointment, order in advance by faxing your order to Elaine Miller at 774-0306, or call her at 774-7684.
The 13th annual Pig Roast runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18, rain or shine. Lunch of a ¼ -pound sandwich, coleslaw, beans, chips and a drink is available under the big tent in the church grounds for $8 each. While you eat, you can enjoy mountain music and a festival fall atmosphere, complete with scarecrows, chrysanthemums, corn stalks and hay bales.
Local craftspeople will offer their creations for sale, and the Smoky Mountain Weavers Guild will give demonstrations. Church members will sell baked goods. A silent auction will give everyone the chance to bid on a variety of items. Pumpkins and corn stalks will also be on sale at reasonable prices.
If you would prefer to make your own meal at home, you can order a smoked pork butt. The butts weigh about 8 pounds after cooking, and cost $35 each. They must be ordered in advance from Marilynn Spence, who co-chairs the event. She can be reached at 368-5047.
She is also the contact for local craftspeople who would like to set up a table at the Pig Roast.
Benefiting from the events are the Mountain Hope Good Shepherd Clinic, which provides health care to the uninsured; Smoky Mountain Area Rescue Ministries, which assists the homeless and destitute; Sevier County Food Ministries, a food pantry supported by many local churches; SafeSpace, which provides shelter and other services to victims of domestic violence; and Smoky Mountain Head Start.
Pig Roast and Fabulous Friday Lunch tickets are available in advance from church members, or at the gate.
