According to Sevier County Sheriff Ron Seals A Gatlinburg man died as a result of drowning at the Flintrock swimming hole in Pittman Center.
Sheriffs Dept. Officers responded to the scene on Monday evening 9/8/2008 and found that Melvin Garcia Rivera, age 18, had drowned after jumping into the deep pool in the river near Greenbriar Island Campground.
The investigation revealed that Rivera had been with other subjects and they went to the river where Rivera jumped from a rock into the river and was unable to swim to the shore.
Rivera was transported to Ft. Sanders Sevier Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation revealed no signs of foul play and alcohol may have been involved but the incident is under investigation by Sevier County Sheriffs Office Criminal Inv. Division.
