Seymour Heights Christian Church continues to serve the community with its latest efforts to build two houses for Habitat for Humanity.
On September 7, the congregation hosted an event they called Tailgate Sunday. The day began with a special outdoor worship assembly and then the congregation built the wall sections for two houses in the church parking lot. They got the idea from Crossroads Missions, a mission organization that specializes in assisting local congregations with short-term mission projects. Crossroads Missions developed a program called Help Build Hope, which specializes in building low cost housing to assist in disaster relief efforts and for organizations like Habitat for Humanity.
The church estimated over 500 volunteers worked together to build the walls and help make two East Tennessee families dreams a reality. In addition to building the houses, they also had teams of people working on various projects throughout the building. Each project had either a local community or global focus. For example, some participants hand-made dozens of blankets for a mission in Mexico while others assisted area school teachers by preparing a variety of classroom projects.
Randy Penwell, Lead Pastor at Seymour Heights Christian Church said, The church has always had a community focus, but we are trying to become more strategic in reaching out to our community and meeting the needs around us. We are excited to partner together with Habitat for Humanity and Crossroads Missions to help build hope for two East Tennessee families.
Sandra Spurling from the Appalachia Habitat for Humanity affiliate in Robbins, TN is thankful to receive these two houses and is excited to work with the church on this project. We hope other churches will follow the example of Seymour Heights Christian Church.
Seymour Heights Christian Church has been actively involved in local and global missions efforts for many years and will continue to try and make a positive impact on the world.
