A fiery meeting of Sevier County politicos was held Wednesday night to discuss the way the elected commissioners will conduct the county’s business in the future.

Wednesday’s meeting was called for by the county’s steering committee, an ensemble of seven select county officials whose job it is to govern the commission, to help shed light on recent criticism about the way the commission’s meetings are operated. Wednesday’s meeting allowed commissioners the platform to ask for specific changes in the way the meetings are conducted.

Wednesday’s proposals gained unanimous consent from the committee but they still have to gain a “yes” vote from two-thirds of the county commission. Sevier County Mayor Larry Waters opted to cancel the regularly-scheduled next commission meeting on June 16. He replaced the canceled meeting with a special session on June 23.

Waters said he rescheduled the meeting to allow more time for the county departments to submit their final budget amendments. The county mayor said rescheduling the meeting is normal procedure for this time of the year. He said it doesn’t make sense to have two meetings so close together.

Waters was told by the steering committee to make a draft of necessary changes to specific areas of the commission’s mode of operation.
