The Civil War is returning to Gatlinburg in living color.
With the objective of recreating the only skirmish in Sevier County fought during the War Between the States, over 150 re-enactors, many from the “Southern Guards Battalion,” will once again invade Gatlinburg June 13 through 15.
Period performers will establish a Civil War camp and recreate the skirmish known as the “Battle of Burg Hill” during the three-day event, which will include a parade, “Meet the Generals” forum, cavalry and artillery demonstrations and marching review.
Companies from Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, South Carolina and Florida are scheduled to participate in the re-enactment. Living History programs begin at 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday where people can get a glimpse of Civil War Era camp life or hear presentations on the “Role of Women in the Civil War” or see a Civil War Medical Tent.
The Siege of Gatlinburg will take place on Friday at 6 p.m., as the Civil War soldiers march through town looking for stores and visitors to pillage. The march will begin near light #6 and go through to light #10 in downtown Gatlinburg.
On Saturday the event will climax with the “Battle of Burg Hill” at 2 p.m. as Northern and Southern forces will struggle to stand their ground against each other. Cannons blaze and soldiers will clash in this thrilling battle re-enactment.
A period church service at 10 a.m. on Sunday, June 15 and other demonstrations are scheduled before the re-enactors break camp to conclude the event in the early afternoon.
Parking for visitors will be provided at Mills Park and the Gatlinburg Pittman High School parking lots, just a short distance from the battlegrounds on Ogle Road.
There is no admission charge to the event.
Children and adults alike will enjoy learning about our American history through up close and personal contact with true-to-life re-enactors.
The "Southern Guards Battalion" was founded in 2001 as a Family oriented Organization of Independent Companies who place God -Country & Honor first and share the same goals and ideals, perpetuating the honor of our ancestors without all the politics associated with most organizations. Since that time, the "Southern Guards" has grown in stature and membership and now has companies in 8 states. In 2006, the Battalion joined with Hardy’s Brigade and are now part of the largest reenacting organization in the Southeastern part of the United States.
