Sevier County, TN: The food rolled in with the “Foods for Fines” promotional event to clear overdue fees for Sevier County Public Library System (SCPLS) cardholders during the weeks of Monday, November 19 through Saturday, December 1, 2007. Patrons with overdue fines were given the option to trade two canned food items or two jars of peanut butter, or any combination of the two to clear fines on their library card in addition to helping local food banks.

This fee-waiving event was a huge success as boxes and boxes of non-perishable items and jars of peanut butter were donated to the Sevier County Food Ministries in Sevierville and the C.R.O.S.S. Ministries in Seymour in lieu of fees for overdue materials. The amount of the fine was irrelevant and patrons were very excited with the option to clear their accounts especially when they understood that the food would help Sevier County families during the holiday season.

In addition to patrons donating to local food banks, the SCPLS Genealogy & History Center chose to participate in the Food for Fines event by donating food items in lieu of exchanging holiday gifts among the staff members. The Sevier County Public Library System wishes to extend their appreciation to all patrons and staff members, with or without fines, who donated to help make this event a wonderful success.
