Tennessee’s Eric Berry snapped a 37-year-old school record during Saturday’s 34-13 win over Arkansas and for his efforts has been named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week.
The Fairburn, Ga., native returned two interceptions for a combined 98 yards and now has 207 interception return yards this season, breaking the old mark of 177 set by Bobby Majors in 1970. Majors accomplished his feat with 10 interceptions compared to Berry’s four, a figure that ties Berry for fourth-best overall in the league and third nationally among freshmen.
In addition, Berry’s total of 207 interception return yards leads the country and already stands third in SEC history behind only Florida’s Joe Brodsky, who had five interceptions for 244 yards in 1956, and LSU’s Greg Jackson, who had seven interceptions for 219 yards in 1988. The major college season record is 302 yards by Southern California’s Charles Phillips, who turned the trick on seven interceptions in 1974.
Berry also is the SEC’s leading freshman tackler with 57. He has made 38 initial stops, one for lost yardage, and 19 assists to go with a 52-yard fumble return and five passes defensed.
