Last year when I wrote an editorial about the definition of valedictorian it got several comments and the most memorable one was regarding the No Child Left Behind political mantra that the nation has gotten behind.

The article asked how can the school have seven valedictorians when the common definition of valedictorian is the student with the best grades who usually delivers the valedictory address at commencement.

Off the record I was told that we don't want to hurt anyone's feelings.

What about the true valedictorian – that person's feelings were not considered.

No Child Left Behind ideology led to other similar events at the schools. Nearly all competitions have numerous winners, runner ups, or placers.
