38-year-old actor Owen Wilson is known for starring in some of the biggest blockbuster movie hits of our time. But now this talented actor is known for something else: His cry for help in the form of a suicide attempt.
But Owen?s desperate measure need not be vane. It is a wake-up call that can be used to shine a light on a significant public health problem that faces our society today.
Rather blame Owen Wilson for his actions, we need to recognize that he is simply guilty of being human and that he suffers from many of the same problems that have led millions of others to suicidal thoughts or attempts.
I have personally counseled many formerly suicidal clients since suicide is now among the top ten causes of death in the United States and a leading cause of death worldwide. The numbers are staggering, 10.9 suicide deaths per 100,000 people. What?s more, researchers believe these numbers are underestimated and that it is estimated that for every one successful suicide, there were likely another 10-25 suicide attempts.
