It was a hectic day as students from within the Sevier County school system returned to school this past Monday, August 20th. Area principals reported that things ran smoothly as students scurried to find their classrooms and meet their new teachers.
Principal Peggy Oakes of Seymour Intermediate School stated, "The day went pretty well all over. We had a few bus problems but I think that has been taken care off. Everyone pitched in and helped get everybody where they should be. There was great teamwork with the staff. Our numbers are a little under from last year but we registered 11 students the next day so the numbers keep changing."
Greg Clark Principal of Seymour High School told the Herald, "I think that Seymour High School had an exceptional first day. I was proud of the students and they behaved well and looked nice. They appear to be a great group of kids." Clark reported 1186 students attended the first day of classes an increase of about 100 students from last year's year-end figures.
Clark wanted to let the Herald Newspaper readers know that Friday night's high school Eagles football game will be delayed to an 8:00 p.m. kick off instead of 7:30 p.m. due to the heat.
Jan Moore Principal of Seymour Primary School stated, "The day went very well. Our traffic was moving a little slowly but parents were patient and we appreciated that. The students had a great day lots of smiles on their faces. They worked hard and played hard, you can't ask for anything more than that. It was a very good start to a great year." Moore reported 597 students attended the first day, slightly down from last year.
Principal Faye Nelson of Seymour Middle School said, "I thought the day went really well. We are all just glad to be back in school, students and teachers. Everyone is looking forward to a wonderful year." Nelson reported around 750 students attended classes Monday about the same as last year.
Students overall seemed pleased with the day. "My teachers seemed pretty nice," stated one student as she left the first day of classes. Another student adds, "So when is the first vacation day?"
