Nashville, Tenn.Sen. Tim Burchett (R-Knoxville) is proud to announce that the Senate passed Senate Bill 1264 by a vote of 29-0.  The bill closes a loophole that allows elected officials to run again after being convicted of an infamous crime related to their public office.

"We are elected by the people to serve the people," said Burchett.  "Corrupt politicians who abuse the people's trust do not deserve a second chance."

Current law allows elected officials who have been convicted of an infamous crime while in public office to seek election again if their citizenship rights have been restored.  Senate Bill 1264 permanently disqualifies these individuals from seeking public office again.

 Before becoming law, the House must pass the bill and the Governor must sign it.
