Blount County Sheriff James Berrong said today that two men were arrested yesterday following a pursuit in south Blount County.
Gerald Todd Cooper, 36, who resides at the 411 Motel in Maryville, and Clinton Andrew Hackler, 35, Little Dug Road, Louisville, are being held at the Blount County Detention Facility. Cooper is being held on five attachments, as well as charges of evading arrest, resisting arrest, and burglary of a business. He is being held without bonds on the attachments, and bonds totaling $26,000 on the other charges. His charges will be heard in Blount County General Sessions Court at both 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. on December 13, and on December 15 at 9 a.m. on the burglary charge. Hackler is being held on two attachments, and will make an appearance in Blount County General Sessions Court on December 13 at 9 a.m.
At around 12:45 p.m. Wednesday, a Blount County Sheriff’s deputy responded to Cooper’s residence at the 411 Motel to serve a warrant on him. The deputy spotted Cooper in his 1990’s model Monte Carlo and attempted to stop him by pulling in front of the vehicle. As the deputy was getting out of his vehicle, Cooper backed up and sped past him onto U.S. Highway 411, heading south. The deputy activated his emergency equipment and attempted to stop the vehicle. The pursuit continued south on U.S. Highway 411, with Cooper running the red light at the Highway 129 junction. Cooper turned left onto Brickmill Road, and then a left onto Old Niles Ferry Road. Cooper was finally forced to stop after his vehicle broke down. Cooper got out of the vehicle and fled on foot. The passenger, Hackler, also attempted to flee, but was captured immediately after getting out of the car.
Several deputies and a K-9 team responded to the scene to search for Cooper. He was located by the K-9 team about 20 minutes later hiding beneath a storage building on private property about a half mile from where the traffic stop was made on Old Niles Ferry Road.
Cooper, who was a suspect in the December 4 burglary of the Fast Lap Market located on Calderwood Highway, confessed to his involvement in that burglary. He was charged with burglary of a business late Wednesday.
