The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) and the Sevierville Police Department have arrested a wanted man found trying to purchase a gun at a local retailer.
On Friday, Ronald Lennard Weeks went to the Wal-Mart Super Store in Sevierville to purchase a .410 gage shotgun. When the store contacted the TBI to conduct a background check, authorities discovered that he was wanted for a 1994 kidnapping in El Paso County, Colorado.
Upon discovering this, the TBI contacted the Sevierville Police Department and Weeks was arrested without incident. Weeks is being held at the Sevier County jail while he awaits extradition back to Colorado in the near future.
The TBI’s Instant Gun Check Unit has identified more than 1,500 wanted persons since it was created in November of 1998. TBI Director Mark Gwyn commends his own employees and officers with the Sevierville Police Department for preventing a potentially dangerous person from obtaining a weapon. “The fact that we could locate and apprehend a man wanted three states away twelve years after his crime was committed is an amazing testament to law enforcement. I would like to extend a personal thank you to the Sevierville Police Department who made the arrest and helped ensure the safety of local citizens.”
