Sweetwater Police Department Eddie Byrum announced today that two burglary suspects were taken into custody early this morning and charged with ten counts each in connection with the burglary of a Sweetwater Conoco station last Sunday night.
Melvin Dewayne Dunn, 36, Coker Road, Maryville, and Billy Andrew Douglas, 20, Gillenwater Drive, Maryville, were each charged with the following: Possession of burglary tools, burglary to an automobile, two counts of theft over $1,000, two counts of vandalism over $1,000, vandalism under $500, theft under $500, criminal conspiracy to commit burglary, and burglary. Dunn and Douglas were being held in the Monroe County Detention Facility, but were transferred to the Blount County Detention Facility Thursday afternoon to face possible charges by both the Blount County Sheriff’s Office and the Maryville Police Department.
Sweetwater Police Department, along with the Blount County Sheriff’s Office, Maryville, Police Department, Knoxville Police Department, Knox County Sheriff’s Office, Sevier County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI, and the TBI, have worked jointly this week in searching for Dunn and Douglas.
Late Sunday night, the Conoco station at 1430 Murrays Chapel Road in Sweetwater was burglarized. An undisclosed amount of cash was taken from both a safe and an ATM machine owned by BB&T Bank. Dunn and Douglas were already under investigation by all of the above agencies as possible suspects in multiple unsolved burglaries across East Tennessee. The task force’s investigation led them to Dunn and Douglas in the early morning hours Monday, the two evaded arrest.
Wednesday night, the Blount County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at Dunn’s residence on Coker Drive in Maryville, where several items from some of the burglaries were recovered. At the same time, Blount County executed an arrest warrant at Douglas’ residence on Gillenwater Road. Both suspects were taken into custody and turned over to the Sweetwater Police Department.
Dunn and Douglas face additional charges in Sweetwater in connection with three other burglaries. They also face charges in several other East Tennessee jurisdictions, as well as in North Carolina.
The investigation into this and the other burglaries is continuing.
