Defensive lineman one of seven USA South Athletic Conference players earning preseason accolades
Colby Townsend, a senior defensive tackle for Maryville College has been named as a 2006 Pre-Season All-American from Don Hansen’s Football Gazette. He was selected as a third team pick for his efforts last season.
The 6’4”, 240 lb. Pre-Season All-American from Naples, Florida was one of seven USA South Athletic Conference players earning pre-season accolades. Kyle Wilson, a senior running back from Averett University was a second team selection. Honorable mention offense selections include senior quarterback Jermaine Pitts from Ferrum College, senior tight end Chris Silk from the Panthers, and Greensboro’s sophomore all-purpose threat Torrey Lowe. Earning honorable mention defensive accolades are Methodist’s junior linebacker Daryl Lawrence and CNU’s senior defensive back Rob Rodriguez.
Townsend helped Maryville to a 3-7 record and sixth place finish in the USA South. In ten games, had had 30 solo stops, 21 assisted tackles, and 11.5 tackles for a loss resulting in 47 yards lost. He also tallied 8 sacks for 38 yards, broke up a pass, and forced three fumbles. He led the USA South Conference with his 8 sacks. He received a top 5 ranking within the conference for his tackles for a loss.
Townsend earned many post-season accolades for his consistency during the 2005 campaign. He was named D3Football.com Honorable Mention All-American, a 2005 D3Football.com second team All-South Region performer and was a 2005 USA South Athletic Conference 1st Team selection.
Townsend was earlier named to the 2006 D3football.com Pre-Season All-American squad.
Townsend will help his team prepare for their season opener on September 2. The Scots will host LaGrange College on MC’s Honaker Field. Kick-off is slated for 1:30 p.m.
