The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center will join in the celebration of the 14th Annual Spring Festival and Old Timers Day in Townsend by presenting an a concert by Four Leaf Peat, a traditional Irish music band, on Saturday, May 6 from 3:00-5:00 pm.
Less than three months after celebrating its grand opening last February, the Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center will present the first concert in its 500-seat open-air auditorium in conjunction with the Spring Festival and Old Timers Day in Townsend. Fittingly for the occasion, the center will present the music of Four Leaf Peat, Knoxville’s premier Irish music group. Nestled in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains, East Tennessee boasts a strong musical heritage, and much of the Old Time and Bluegrass music known to this region finds its roots in the Scots-Irish tradition.
The concert in the open-air auditorium begins at 3:00 pm, and earlier in the afternoon, members of Four Leaf Peat will perform as wandering musicians among the pioneer-era structures located on the center’s three acres. Also, throughout the day, beginning at 10:00 am, there will be many activities and demonstrations such as spinning & dyeing, woodcarving, historic games, open hearth cooking, storytelling, beekeeping, candle making, and more.
The concert is free with paid admission to the Heritage Center. Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for ages 6-18 and over 60. Children under 6 are admitted free. The Great Smoky Mountains Heritage Center is located on State Route 73, near the Townsend entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Hours are 10 am – 5 pm Tuesday – Saturday, 1-5 pm Sundays, and closed on Mondays. For more information, call 865-448-0044 or log on to www.gsmheritagecenter.org.
