Former U.S. Attorney Jerry Cunningham has decided to throw his hat into the Blount County Mayoral Race and will be on the ballot for the county’s May 2 Republican Primaries.
The 63-year-old Blount County native was appointed by former President Bush as United States Attorney. He was also appointed by then-governor Lamar Alexander to serve on the State Judicial Commission. Cunningham is now retired from the law profession, following his extensive public service and employment with the Maryville law firm, Kizer and Black.
Cunningham spent 13 months serving his country during the Vietnam War as a Captain in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Cunningham now raises Big Belgian Draft Horses from his farm in Walland.
“Due to the unfortunate illness of the mayor, the county has been left to drift for the past couple of years,” said Cunningham. “I feel that my track record will reflect that I have the leadership qualities necessary to help address growth issues, infrastructure, and the restoration of pride of citizens in their governing officials,” he said.
Cunningham has been married to his wife, Janis Kleppe Cunningham, for the past 38 years. They have three children and three grandchildren.
