The King’s Academy senior forward Carl Josey is the lone county basketball player to be named to the 2005-06 Tennessee Sports Writers All-State Team.
The 6-foot-5 England native led East Tennessee in rebounds per game and was among the top five leading scorers despite missing a handful of games because of a nagging injury.
Josey, a Virginia Military Institute signee, is one of eight players on the Division II TSWA All-State squad. Others on the Division II team are Brandon Wright, a University of North Carolina signee, from Brentwood Academy, and Joshua Bone, who also played his prep career at Brentwood Academy.
Josey is the first player from The King’s Academy to be named All-State since Lee Walker, who later signed with East Tennessee State, was bestowed the honor in 1995.
“It was pleasing to get some recognition,” said Josey. “I kind of was hoping for it but I didn’t know if I would get recognized because I played for such a small school.
“I think my family will be pleased to hear it. They don’t know that much about it but they’ll be proud.”
Dan Kirkpatrick, Athletics Director at The King’s Academy, said it’s always nice to hear that one of the school’s athletes is being recognized for their accomplishments.
“We were pleasantly surprised when we found out that he was named All-State,” Kirkpatrick commented. “It’s a great honor for Carl. I think he deserves all the recognition he gets. Everyone here at the school is really happy for him.”
University of Tennessee signee Wayne Chism, from Bolivar Central, is a member of the Class AA All-State team, along with Bolivar teammate and Memphis signee Willie Kemp.
Alcoa’s Brandon Warren, who is going to Florida State to play football, made the Class AA squad as did Knox Catholic’s Matt Parton and McMinn Central’s Beau Brown.
Area players on the Class AAA team include Bearden’s Tony White Jr. and Steven Pearl of Knox West.
Cosby’s Timmy Blakely was named to the Class A team.
