An early-morning house fire in Gatlinburg claimed the life of the home’s occupant while she was asleep.
According to Kenneth Ogle with the Gatlinburg Fire Department, the station received a call just after 2 a.m. Tuesday morning when firefighters were dispatched to a residence on Poplar Lane near Carrs Northside Cottages.
Ogle said that there were several people staying in rental rooms on the bottom story of the home all of whom escaped the building without injury.
Ogle also said that either the smoke alarms in the home were not working, or no one was able to hear them for some reason or another.
The fire destroyed about 50 percent of the home, according to Ogle, and appears to have started in the kitchen.
