Seymour High School competed in the East Tennessee Academic Decathlon at the University of Tennessee Saturday January 28, 2006, placing fourth. Academic Decathlon is modeled after the athletic decathlon in that all students compete in ten events. Academic Decathlon is unique in that it takes students of varying levels of academic achievement to compete against other students of the same levels.
Students with grade point averages of 3.75 and above compete in the honors division, students with a GPA of 3.00 to 3.74 compete in the Scholastic division and students with a GPA of 3.00 an below compete in the varsity division.
Medals are awarded in each division and for each subject. Seymour placed fourth in the overall competition and second earning a silver medal in the super quiz competition, which consists of oral questions, posed to each student but scored as team results. Individually Leah Festa won bronze medal in Economics, Joe Heaton won gold in math, Nate Ogle won gold in economics, bronze in science, gold in math and silver in music, Ashlee Blaydes won bronze in language and literature and gold in art, Kyle Damphier won bronze in science and silver in math.
