Work is currently underway to erect a new traffic light in Seymour, near the Boyds Creek and Chapman Highway intersection, in front of the Food City grocery store.
According to construction workers on-sight on Monday afternoon, the light will take a few weeks to put in place, and will be in flashing mode for at least another week before it is actually turned on.
Food City representatives went to the Sevier County Commission last year to request that a traffic light be built at the store’s front, on Chapman Highway. At the time, Food City presented the commissioners with a petition for the light, citing safety concerns among Seymour residents.
“We know there were at least two fatalities in front of the old store, and in the concern of safety we decided to move to the new location,” said Food City Regional Manager Steve Trout. “We moved from the old location because we couldn’t get a light there, and we moved to the new location with the understanding that we would get a traffic light.”
The project met approval from Tennessee Department of Transportation officials, and passed the Sevier County Commission in August.
At the August meeting, commissioners approved a maintenance contract on the traffic light, consisting of changing the light bulbs when they burn out. Food City is going to pay for the traffic light, the installation and necessary spec work.
