ABINGDON, VA – Food City is preparing to launch their 3rd Annual Race Against Hunger campaign to raise funds for hunger relief.  The four-week promotion (October 30 – November 26, 2005), is co-sponsored by Miller Brewing Company, Pepsi and Brawny.
Since 1992 Food City has operated the annual FOOD FOR ALL holiday campaign to raise funds for local non-profit organizations.  In 2003, Food City teamed with Miller Brewing Company and Brawny to introduce the Race Against Hunger theme.
“The program is very straightforward. Customers simply select the donation amount of choice, hand it to the cashier and the amount is added to their grocery bill,” said Tom Hembree, senior vice president of marketing for Food City.
$1, $3, and $5 scan able donation coupons are located at each Food City checkout. With every dollar contribution made using their ValuCard, customers are electronically entered for a chance to win tickets to a spectacular season of racing at Bristol Motor Speedway.
The prize package, valued at $2,500 includes tickets to an entire season of action-packed racing at Bristol Motor Speedway, including Busch, Nextel, USAR, Craftsman Truck and NHRA racing, Food City Family Race Night Events, select hotel accommodations, parking and hospitality village passes.
Or, the winner can elect to have Food City make a contribution (equal to the value of the prize pack) to the charity of their choice in lieu of the tickets.
“Hunger is a serious problem in America.  Food City and our co-sponsors are proud to be a part of the Race Against Hunger,” says Steven C. Smith, Food City president and chief executive officer.
Proceeds from the Race Against Hunger promotion will benefit area non-profits including Hope, Inc., various Second Harvest Food Banks, Hazard Perry Co. Community Ministries, Upper Cumberland Homeless Shelter, New Covenant Kitchen and others.
