Washington, D.C. – The Maryville College Board of Directors has named Congressman John J. Duncan, Jr., (R-Tenn.) a recipient of the institution’s Distinguished Service Award. College President Gerald Gibson presented the award to Duncan in Washington Tuesday evening.
Maryville College established the Distinguished Service Award in 1990 to recognize individuals who exemplify the ideals of the College and have demonstrated outstanding service in their community, church, or chosen profession. The Board presents one award in each category annually and elected to honor Duncan for his community service.
“Congressman Duncan has always been a strong advocate of higher education, particularly the kind of education our institution strives to give to its students,” Gibson said. “His participation in a wide variety of community service organizations such as the Boy Scouts and his church, his support of corporate endeavors and innovative technologies, and his advocacy for strengthening our community are widely recognized and well-known by his constituents.”
Gibson added, “We are proud of his exemplary service to our community and our region and are pleased to recognize him with one of the College’s most prestigious awards.”
Past award winners include former Maryville Mayor Stanley B. “Skeeter” Shields, Pilot Oil Chief Executive Officer James Haslam II, and former Southeastern Conference Commissioner Roy Kramer.
“I am grateful Maryville College has presented me with its Distinguished Service Award,” Duncan said. “Dr. Gibson and the Board provide the College with tremendous leadership and work tirelessly to increase its resources and expand its presence in our community. The College is a prestigious institution noted for academic excellence and a true asset for East Tennessee.”
