Fulton’s high flying Falcons overcame a four point deficit at the half to beat Seymour 52-48 in the finals of the District 3-AA boys tournament Friday night at Carter. Fulton used a 16-4 scoring burst in the first six minutes of the third quarter to grab a 37-29 lead over the Eagles.
Before the game Seymour coach Randy Moore stated: “ Our team is playing very well right now, but we need to stay focused. I expect Fulton to come out strong since we beat them the last time we played.
The Eagles took an early lead and kept it until halftime on the strength of five 3-pointers. They led after one quarter 13-12, and by 25-21 after two. Fulton missed several easy shots in close, but stayed within a few points throughout the half by forcing numerous Seymour turnovers and hitting the offensive boards. Both teams played very aggressive man-to-man defense the whole game.
The Falcons sprinted out to an eight point lead in the third quarter, but Seymour clawed back. Led by reserve Michael Serafine’s eight points in the quarter, the Eagles cut the deficit to four at 39-35 heading into the fourth. Seymour took the lead 48-47 with 1:48 left in the game on a basket by Duncan Smith. But the Eagles would not score again as Fulton closed out the game with five consecutive points.
Isaiah Ray and Darrell Battle scored 14 points each to lead the Falcons, while Serafine had 11 for Seymour. Chris Slay and Josh Harmon were held to eight points apiece by Fulton’s stifling defense. Fulton’s Rushawn Reeves led all players in rebounding with eight. Seymour moves on to play Lenoir City on Tuesday at 9:00 in the Region 2-AA tournament, also at Carter. Fulton will meet Scott County at 4:30.
