At the Daytona International Speedway on Sunday two old timers managed to pull it out and placed in the top ten in the final 500. Mark Martin ended his final Daytona 500 in 6th
and Rusty Wallace ended his final Daytona in 10th. They didn’t win but they placed and for someone who’s been driving as long as these two, that ain’t to shabby.
Wallace stated that he put in a good performance and ran strong all day, saying he was in the top five or 10 all day. Wallace thought he had a chance to win as did Martin. He too had a strong car and had a chance like the rest in the pack, unfortunately it just wasn’t in the cards. Martin stated that he was “proud of his race team and Pat Tryson,” his crew chief.
Martin and Wallace, finish their Daytona 500 careers a combined 0-for-44. Martin said he and Wallace had a “pact” to draft with one another as much as possible Sunday. He told NASCAR.com, “We had a little problem at Talladega a year ago where he said he was going to go with me and didn’t, and I didn’t think that was going to happen today,” Martin said. “Rusty and I knew this was our last shot, and I would’ve helped at the end and he would help me. I figured that was probably the most loyal friend I had on the racetrack at the end of the race.”
Jeff Gordon took home the win with an exciting finish at this years Daytona 500.
