Marable wins
in both singles and doubles; Schaub won her singles contest
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The No. 18 University of Tennessee Lady Vol (0-1) tennis team dropped their dual-match season opener on Saturday afternoon, falling to 15th-ranked North Carolina.(3-0), 5-2.
Sophomore Blakeley Griffith (Middleburg, Va. / Loudoun County H.S.) and freshman Bryce Marable (Darien, Ill. / Hinsdale South H.S.), playing as a doubles tandem for the first time this season, won at No. 3 for the Lady Vols, defeating Caitlin Collins and Alexandra Jurewitz, 8-3.
The Tar Heels however took the other two doubles matches to secure the doubles point and lead the match, 1-0. At No. 2, UNC’s Sara Anundsen and Jenna Long topped the Lady Vol tandem of junior Melissa Schaub (Lexington, Ohio / Lexington H.S.) and freshman Ghizela Schutte (Ninapark, South Africa / Damelin College), 8-5. The 14th-ranked Tar Heel pair of Aniela Mojzis and Kendall Cline topped UT’s 51st-ranked duo of junior Sabita Maharaj (Gainesville, Fla. / Buchholz H.S.) and senior Ashley Robards (Henderson, Ky. / Henderson County H.S.), 8-4.
Marable took the singles No. 4 match by defeating Collins, 6-4, 6-3, while Schaub won at No. 6 over Charlotte Tansill, 6-4, 7-5.
In the No. 1 match, Maharaj, ranked 50th nationally, fell to No. 26 Aniela Mojzis, 7-6, 6-7, (10-7). The match went straight to a super-tiebreaker as the match had already been decided at that point and a men’s contest was set to begin.
In other singles action, Griffith fell at No. 2 to 37th-ranked Cline, 6-4, 6-4; No. 107 Jones lost the No. 3 match to Long, 6-4, 6-3, while Schutte was short at No. 5, falling to Anundsen, 6-2, 6-2.
The Lady Vols now head to Durham, N.C., to take on eighth-ranked Duke (0-0). First serve is set for noon on Sunday.
