Basketball fans will have the opportunity to meet one of the legends of the game when Tara VanDerveer visits the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame on Monday, December 20, for a “meet-and-greet” reception.
The reception is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Hall’s South Rotunda and is open to the public.
VanDerveer will be in Knoxville as her Stanford women’s basketball team will be playing at the University of Tennessee the following evening (December 21, 7:00 p.m. tip-off at Thompson-Boling Arena). Stanford is currently 7-0 and ranked No. 2 in the nation in both the USA TODAY/ESPN and Associated Press polls (Stanford will play at Missouri on December 18 before traveling on to Tennessee).
In her 26th year as a collegiate coach, VanDerveer has compiled a 609-168 worksheet for a .784 winning percentage. That includes a 457-117 mark in 18-plus seasons at Stanford, where she has guided the Cardinal to a pair of NCAA Championships (1990 and 1992).
VanDerveer guided the United States to a gold medal at the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. Under her direction, the USA National Team notched a flawless 60-0 record in 1995-96 during an extensive tour leading up to and through the Olympics.
VanDerveer was inducted into the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002.
The mission of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame is to “honor the past, celebrate the present, and promote the future” of women’s basketball.
