Many have seen the footage or are aware of the recent brawls in the NBA and college football. What we saw were out-of-control behaviors by players and fans alike. It was very ugly and totally unsportsmanlike. What surprises me is that it doesn’t happen more often. There are a few professional basketball players that are powder kegs waiting to go off. Then there are some alcohol-fueled fans that are in the same category. When they invade each other’s space you have strong potential for violence, like what occurred in Detroit.
Charles Barkley once said he doesn’t want to be a role model. He justified that by saying it’s a parent’s job. I tend to agree with him. Parents affect their child’s behavior more than anyone. In one-parent homes the responsibility for teaching and disciplining usually falls to the mother. Divorced fathers, in addition to providing financial support, should help the child’s mother in providing moral guidance. Too many fathers abandon their children, both physically and emotionally. For a lot of kids, this can lead to behavior problems.
Many parents in America are too concerned with themselves to be attentive to their children’s needs. Dads are sometimes so into their jobs they neglect their kids. Some moms fall into this trap too. Emotionally neglecting your children can be devastating to their development and well-being. Way too many kids today are fat and lazy, wasting away their time in front of television and computer screens. This is the fault of lazy parents who are content with this kind of lifestyle. When their kids get into trouble, they don’t want to take any blame.
Many of our problem athletes and fans probably came from homes where discipline was not consistently used. Parents are to blame for this, and it usually comes back to haunt them when their children get older. Too many kids are not held accountable for their behavior, and this leads to a general lack of respect for authority. Nobody ever said being a parent was easy.
