Carson-Newman College President Dr. James Netherton has been elected to the NCAA Division II Presidents Council, and will begin his term at the conclusion of the NCAA Convention in January.
Dr. Netherton will be one of three new members on the Presidents Council, a group of 15 institutional chief executive officers that serves as the principal governing body for Division II.
“I am humbled by the prospect of serving on the Presidents Council,” said Netherton. “Intercollegiate athletics are an important part of the overall educational experience. They afford our scholar athletes vital leadership opportunities and the help teach the value of good sportsmanship and community involvement.”
“Dr. Netherton will be an excellent representative for the South Atlantic Conference and all of Division II,” said Doug Echols, Commissioner of the South Atlantic Conference. “His leadership will be an asset to the Presidents Council.”
Dr. Netherton has been active in the administration of intercollegiate athletics for more than two decades. He became president at Carson-Newman in February 2000. Before that, he served as provost at Samford University (1996-2000) and as senior vice-president and chief operating officer at Baylor University (1981-96).
Before moving into administration, Dr. Netherton was an associate professor of mathematics and computer science at Armstrong Atlantic State University.
Dr. Netherton has been active in the Commission of Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, serving as commissioner, chairing 21 accreditation committees and chairing various Southern Association committees.
He was a recipient of the association’s Meritorious Service Award in 2002. At the 2004 NCAA Convention, Netherton represented Division II in a presidential panel discussion on “Creating and Sustaining a Culture of Integrity in Intercollegiate Athletics on Campus.”
He has a B.S. in mathematics from the University of Mississippi and a PhD from the University of Virginia. The South Atlantic Conference is composed of eight private, liberal arts, church-affiliated colleges and universities located in North Carolina, South Carolina and eastern Tennessee. Division II is a dynamic and engaging group of colleges, universities and conferences of varying sizes and educational missions that are committed to an environment that encourages and supports diversity, values sportsmanship, fairness and equity, and places the highest priority on the overall educational experience of the Division II student-athlete in the conduct of intercollegiate athletics.
