The Seymour Volunteer Fire Department dedicated their newest fire station Thursday, Aug. 26. The station is located on Highway 411 in Blount County and serves parts of Sevier and Blount County.
The station was dedicated and named after Judy Dixon, who passed away eight years ago from cancer, and was accepted by Dixon’s husband, sons and daughter-in-law.
The station is located on land that the Dixon family leased to the Fire Department for 20 years at a cost of $1 per year.
“I have learned to appreciate firefighters a lot more over the past few years,” said Blount County Mayor, Beverly Woodruff. “It takes special people to do this work,” Woodruff said. “We owe thanks to all the firefighters. I am just so proud to have this station in Blount County.”
Ron Dixon unveiled a plaque in honor of Judy Dixon and presented the family with a beautiful glass trophy to commemorate the event.
Dixon described Judy Dixon as a caring and considerate citizen that loved to mow the grass.
The station will serve a small area in Blount County and can be called on to assist in Sevier and South Knox counties as well. The station will respond to fires, emergency medical needs and wrecks and has three trucks assigned.
“As a Blount County resident, I appreciate the station,” said Al Lietch, a member of the fire department. “It’s just a privilege and honor to be a part of this.”
The Seymour Volunteer Fire Department will be starting their fall fundraiser soon, but donations are accepted all year long. You can mail any donation to P.O. Box 911, Seymour, Tenn., 37865.
